Jon’s No. 1 Tip for Exercising Your Voice

A little bit, more often, is better than a whole lot, all at once.

Jon's No. 1 Tip for Exercising Your Voice

If you’ve ever gardened, you know that the least exciting work—but in some ways the most important—is to stay on top of those weeds. When Sandy and I are trying to get the butternut squash to “take” in the front yard, as we did last summer, it’s far better to get those weeds out regularly than it is to come in three weeks later and do a big cleanup.

Your voice is like a garden.

It’s at its best when you tend to it regularly. And how do you do that? By exercising your voice for a few minutes, a few times a week. My voice teacher says that 10 to 20 minutes a day, five or six days a week, is the best way to keep the voice in good basic condition. She’s right. I try to do this myself, but don’t always hit the mark. The good news is that, once you start, there’s some momentum that happens… and you don’t have to exercise your voice by yourself.
